  • Let's go back in time; further than the financial crisis but not as far as the 7/7 bombings.

I remember when it happened - 7/7, that is. It was chaos for a day or so and then everything went back to normal. The media was full of talk of The Great British Resolve but, for me, it was just about sticking with my Londoner routine of getting up in the morning and going to work.

With equal clarity, I can recall the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. There have been articles, speeches, global movements and a whole lot of people taking things a whole lot more seriously than they used to.

How have I come to this conclusion? This picture was taken on a rare dry day in the soggy summer of 2007. As you can see, I am dressed as a pirate and having a sword fight with a ninja. It was a delirious, and frivolous, coming together of disparate people from all over the country to celebrate good, old-fashioned silliness.

What you probably can't tell is that this is taking place outside St Paul's Cathedral - the same St Paul's Cathedral that has more recently played host to the Occupy London Movement.

A terrorist attack can never take away our spirit but an attack on our wallets is the difference between pirates and protesters. It's a funny world, isn't it?
