  • What does LP stand for you might wonder? Liam's Pancreas. Yep, not only am I his mom but I'm also his non-insulin producing pancreas. My husband is also his pancreas, we take turns and often team up because, you know, it can take two intelligent brains to be a toddler's pancreas. Have you ever considered how hard a toddler's pancreas works? Probably not. I certainly never did.

Being my young son's pancreas is incredibly stressful and exhausting. We are constantly guessing how much insulin to give him and waking up nearly every night, several times, to correct his blood sugar. We do our best not to imagine the very scary complications from highs and lows, among them seizures. People really have no idea how complicated it is to be someone's pancreas, let alone for a picky, unpredictable toddler.

There's accountability too. Every three months we are basically graded on how well we've served as his pancreas. We wait with baited breath to find out his a1c; or average blood sugar level to those of you not schooled in Diabetes. So far, we're doing really well, impressing his docs, but there's always a fear we'll slip as our young boy grows and numbers change.

It's hard being a parent. Every day holds surprises and tests. Add to that being your kid's pancreas and the job is that much more challenging.
