  • I had put down fresh newspaper under the bird play stand before turning Charli loose to play on the table and the stand. I turned to my computer to write, happy the bird was eating a treat and not fussing or demanding to be petted. A few minutes later I look over and see she has carefully chewed the newspaper at the edge of the table until it draped down to the floor like a long swatch of silken fabric. She stood there proudly, encouraging me to applaud her efforts. Which, of course, I did.
