  • I guess those who marry on Leap Day have a much better chance of remembering their anniversaries. It's heavily advertised, and only occurs 25% as often as others. That's maybe why the County Courthouse was bursting with brides this afternoon, the loveliest of whom was my treasured middle child. She has seen the worst of marriage, and thus tainted, I had feared this day would never come. Now here she is, radiating boundless love! A day cannot be happier than this!

    There were 12 of us in all, packed into the jury box for optimal viewing. Her father, attentions elsewhere, stayed away. But I could feel the ghost of this man whom I once loved, my co-conspirator in her creation, as it came to sit beside me there; bearing witness to our own redemption.
