  • "Come on, get up! It's time to watch the sunrise on the beach!"

This was what my mind said to my body automatically at 5:45am today, as it has everyday for the past month. It was accustomed to waking for this treasured part of my vacation. The first light.

But when I opened my eyes, I remembered that the sun is rising without me, and I am in a dark room with the blinds closed. Nowhere near the sunrise and nowhere near the beach.

Seeing no reason to move, I closed my eyes again. Then I reminded myself that I might not be there anymore, but it is still with me. Every morning.
