  • A few weeks ago, I got an invitation to the wedding of my best friend from college.

The fourth wedding of my best friend from college.

But it's not what you think.

Her first wedding was in San Francisco and was shortly thereafter annulled by the state of California.

Her second wedding was in Toronto, Canada, but it was not considered legal in the U.S.

Her third wedding -- in 1997 -- was on a hot summer day in Maine, and while legitimate in the eyes of all the friends and family who gathered to show their support, it wasn't actually legal.

Her fourth wedding will be in September in Washington, DC where she and her partner of nearly 20 years will finally be married, finally legally, in the place where they live and work and are raising their two sons.

    It's 2015.

Today, love is winning. Love is winning.
