On the kitchen table, the caregivers kept diaries in which they would take notes of my great-aunt's every move throughout the day (and night) during the last few years of her life. With exacting detail, they describe what she ate, her mood, when she was moved from the bedroom to the dining room or to the library, what she watched on the television, and who came to visit her that day. While there is a certain banal monotony to the notes, the extreme care with which they are taken reflect the respect and even love that the caregivers had for Aunt Gussie.
