    was pretty much
    like any other day,
    the phone rang and rang
    until finally ringing me awake
    an hour before
    I had planned on getting up,
    only for the caller to end it
    in a hang-up
    by the time I got to it
    with a crash and burn kind
    of click and buzz.
    I returned to bed
    only to lay there wide awake,
    losing the battle of getting more sleep,
    tossing and turning,
    unable to get back that one last hour.
    I was distracted by things:
    the incessant ticking
    of my bedside clock which seemed
    abnormally louder than usual;
    a fly seemingly dive bombing me
    only to finally crawl along my arm
    and causing me to shoo it over and over;
    I could overhear
    both of my neighbors across the way
    through my bedroom window
    just loud enough
    what a big asshole I am.
    minutes later
    I walked outdoors
    to check my mail
    as usual
    it was late,
    as one of the neighbors
    who called me a big asshole earlier
    smiled at me
    kept smiling
    oh so very innocently
    asking me
    how I'm doing?
