  • I painted this fantasy about the people of San Cristóbal about 20 years ago. The pospulation was heavily divided: the mostly conservative "Criollos", who were the business owners, the tourists, who were feared by these first ones, because they often were Hippies and brought in new and "dangerous ideas - and the indigenous Mayans: feared by the criollos, here called AUTHENTIC COLETOS, and venerated by the second...

    20 years later this fantasy seems a bit more reality: Racism has come down, even though it still is much too strong, Mayans walk the streets with a new self confidence and many foreign tourists have stayed, married (divorced!!!) had bicultural children. Society is linked better,,,,

    Sometimes things do change a little bit for the better!
