  • She lives in an urban slum outside Dhaka in a little house made of bamboo and on stilts. Her profession is "Beddani" or someone who provides pain relief through alternative medicine practices/rituals. Her work can involve sucking blood out of a patient. Her community - Boddhi - are finding that their old way of life is coming under pressure. In the past, so I am given to understand, they would stay in one location for two or three months and then push off on their boats.

    Bangladesh is very diverse but the image projected and enshrined in the constitution is that it is a muslim country and everyone's mother tongue is Bengali. This sadly ignores history and reality. And worse it excludes. She is Bengali and Bangladeshi but she is not muslim.
