  • Our new puppy woke my grandson and I just before dawn. The world outside was exploding in birdsong. I grabbed my audio recorder and let him listen through the filter of the recorder and headphones. “Listen,” I said, “Do you hear how many different birds there are?”

“That’s so weird. With my ears I only hear like three, but with the headphones there are so many.”

“Yes,” I said. “But if you stop and listen carefully you can hear them with your ears. The headphones just force you to focus. I want you to learn to hear the world around you, really hear it.”

He smiled. I left him with the headphones and went to brush my teeth. That’s when I spotted the spider.

“Come quick,” I yelled. I pointed to the ceiling, “Listen.”

He lifted the mic to the ceiling and his face lit up. "That's cool."
