  • "Name the seven continents," I say. They recite them in unison - North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. "Now, name the Oceans of the World," I say. "Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and the Arctic," the children intone, not quite as confidently.

Waking now from fitful dreams full of incongruities, alone in the velvet darkness that feels somehow safer than the harsh light of day, my lonely mind sweeps across the seven continents and five great oceans in search of significance.

The world is so much more than names.

seven continents, five oceans, 7 billion people
how can I explain a world
    I don't fully comprehend
    bigger than my imagination
    but small in the universe
    orbiting a life-giving star
repository of all hope, fear, deeds, dreams
    finally, all love
a blue world that is our home

North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica. Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic.

    I am here.
