  • My psychotherapist regularly tells me how important friendship is.
    'It is SO important that you have friends.' She says, scribbling notes while I lazily and sulkily flick through a magazine from her coffee table. 'Every friend has their benefits, you will give to them and they will give to you.'
    'oh really?' I respond my voice laced with sarcasm. 'Because I never would have thought of that.' I say, rolling my eyes.
    'When was the last time you saw your best friend?' she asked ignoring my teenage attitude.
    'erm.' I responded. 'Well, I've been busy.' I say, knowing now where this is going. How does she know so much about me? It's so irritating.
    I leave her office and think about my best friend, about the conversations we have had where we have started off talking about world peace and ended with tears of laughter rolling down our faces. When we have met for one quiet drink on a Saturday afternoon and ended up getting home at 2am after making new friends in bars across London. When I have felt so quiet and lonely that I have preferred my own company, my own voice and my own advice, and she has turned up, wine in hand and we have talked until I've felt better.
    We have been through illnesses, redundancy at work, family issues together and I can't remember when I last saw her? how did that happen? I walk away from my psychotherapist's office and I type her name into my phone.
    Hours later, as the barman snaps a photo of us for our own personal history books, I look at her and I think, friendship: it is so so important. Every friend has their benefits.
    Didn't someone once say that to me?
