  • Produced for WCAI's Sonic IDs
(Part of a collaboration between Transom and Cowbird)

    Notes from Jay Allison

Jeremy Hobson was our summer intern when he was a young teen radio prodigy (he now hosts "Here and Now" on NPR). Jeremy leapt into making Sonic IDs and made some of the great ones, often using music really well. This one uses the music of time.

Jeremy says, "Gathering this tape, to me, was what Sonic IDs are all about. I walked up to a man at random - and asked him to tell me about anything he wanted. He told me he used to be the keeper of the clock at the Congregational Church, which was right across the street. I noticed it was almost the top of the hour and asked if we could go up and record the sound of the bell ringing. We did. He hadn't been up there in years and started to remember what his old job had been like. It was then that he gave me what is perhaps the best piece of tape I've ever gotten: 'I think my ultimate reason for retiring is that I don't really care what time it is.'"
