    Notes from Jay Allison

Sometimes you don't have to travel far to find a story. Donald LeBlanc is Sophie's grandfather.

Sophie was our intern. She writes, "It was incredibly easy recording my Pepere. He is a true story teller, and although many of the stories have been told (and heard) a thousand times, this was for a new audience and the material was fresh to their ears. I turned on the recorder and he just started talking. A running joke in my family is that he asks if I want a garden tour. "It's 10 cents. Two for a quarter." The response is always "Put it on my tab." So out we went. Not much grows in September, but we walked the perimeter as always. When we passed under the old maple tree I directed him toward his hammock. It's seen better days, that hammock. But Pepere loves it. When I think of my childhood, the way I picture Pepere is in his garden with a broad-brimmed straw hat or sound asleep on his hammock. He is happiest in his backyard bit of nature."
