  • Produced for WCAI's Sonic IDs
(Part of a collaboration between Transom and Cowbird)

    Notes from Jay Allison

Viki Merrick is really the Queen of Sonic ID production. She shepherds every one through draft form until editing, tracking, and final mixing with me. She knows more than anyone else about our archive of hundreds of these things, and she also deals with the complex and infuriating computer systems that randomize them and fire them off on the radio every hour or two, every day. We will not speak of her suffering.

Viki recorded this ID and many others with Milton. His accent is one you don't hear much around here anymore. We're glad his voice is preserved. Viki says, "I heard a lot of stories about Milton Jeffers - like, he was the last Wampanoag Indian born and raised on Chappaquiddick Island, that he cooked eels and black duck like no other and made his own tools to catch them. So I spent a day with him and thank God. He died the next day - a good reminder to go out and get the stories today."

Since we began this project about fifteen years ago, Viki and I have had an unexpected task. We need to go back and record my tracks pretty regularly to re-identify people's names with the modifier, "the late..."
