  • We read about these pastel de Belém and apparently there is the one cafe in Lisbon that has the best. After taking in all of the sites, we finally found ourselves in the neighborhood where these unbelievably tasty pastries are to be found.

This was a time before geo-location awareness apps that could easily pinpoint you at your exact location. Both a blessing and a curse... but mainly a point of frustration from my site-weary feet. In addition, we apparently found ourselves in a neighborhood with many cafes to choose from.

But at this point, we didn't travel thousands of miles to go to the wrong one. I mean, when is the last time we were going to be back? Right?

Tired and slightly confused, we were about to give up and go to any of the plentiful cafes when an elderly man saw us walking aimlessly. Not knowing how best to communicate, he simply got our attention, waved us to follow him and walked away. I suspected he was our White Rabbit.

After chasing his shadow around the block, we stumbled upon a cafe that was packed with locals. We knew we were at the right place.

I turned to thank the man but he was nowhere to be found. He was gone as quickly as he appeared to us.
