  • how i watched those hands
and waited for the bell to ring
    or punched the time clock
    those hands that signal
    just now
    and yet
    how i ignored the time
    spent gazing at the hands
    while each breath shortened
only to arrive and go away again

    when I was a kid
i would stand on the roof of my garage
    that adjoined my bedroom window
    and through the misty fog
i could make out the clock tower
    in downtown Santa Monica
    about a half mile away
I could see those hands on the face
of the clock, I knew the time would come
when I would never see time
in quite the same way again

    watching the hands
is a game of cat and mouse
you can play with it, it can go haywire on you
you can steal it, hide it, find it
the more you watch it, the slower it goes
the more you ignore it, the faster it flies
in a real pinch you can procrastinate the hell out of it
but those hands are soooo mesmerizing
    they spin tales, weave events
and sometimes catch you by surprise by running out
the older I get, the younger they appear
and though I grow older watching them
they are perpetually reborn, youthful, sinewy, graceful, articulate

    such lovely hands
