  • It's been 7 months since we last met. We have set foot in 3 continents together.

On Saturday, May 31, 2014, I met Andrew at the Toronto bus station. Unaware of his impending great journey, I was in the city and decided to find an excuse to meet before his departure time of 12:45 am. Only I didn't know that he was about to head back north to the Arctic, this time with the goal of examining how Inuit Elders transfer their traditional knowledge to the young about hunting.

Strolling by Harbourfront as the eye of a snow storm mercilessly hit the city, we talked and sat in silence watching the fog consume the horizon and the waves undulate.

Andrew is telling me about a conversation he had with an Elder:

"They say if you whistle at the northern lights, they come closer and you can play with them. So I told him that I whistled at them and he laughed."

I will keep that in mind.
