  • The Grandmother

This is a contented grandmother who died alone in her sleep of unknown causes,

Inside of which is a kind lady whose thrice-broken heart grew strong as she rocked hundreds of babies in the nursery where she worked for her last 25 years,

Inside of which is an injured woman whose estranged husband returned, briefly, to take care of her, while their confused children watched from the sidelines,

Inside of which is a single parent who nearly died in a car accident while going to pick up bread one snowy day in January,

Inside of which is a weary mother of five whose laid-off husband never came home though she knew where he was but was too embarrassed to tell anyone,

Inside of which is an able woman who spent a decade making babies and meals and wildly unpredictable ends meet,

Inside of which is a beautiful young woman who went to the city and married her boyfriend's taller, more handsome brother,

Inside of which is the small-town homecoming queen riding high in the back of a convertible who let her cousin's best friend kiss her and then some,

Inside of which is the bereft teenager whose father died of a heart attack one day after his lunch break in the bottling plant,

Inside of which is the proud ten-year-old Girl Scout with her sewing badge and her handmade calico dress,

Inside of which is the happy kindergartener with her two tiny dogs Tuffy and Mitzy,

Inside of which is the only precious baby of two joyful immigrants,

Who is conceived during the war,
