  • AFTERBURN

    I like
    to think
    we're different
    than everybody else
    when it comes
    to remembering
    only the good times
    and all the finer things,
    the shapely body
    and
    the pretty face
    with our unwavering willingness
    to serve and then surrender
    to each other,
    and
    of course,
    our perky long shot aim
that two people such as us
can erase all the past mistakes
    of a poor psychology.

    it's
    always
    so very close
    and almost in reach,
    but
    it's never in hand,
    this much can be said.

    so
    is it
    just memory then,
in love with its own mystery?
    and
    nervous
    about every little thing?
    and
    always
    asking questions why
good intentions seem to go astray?

    or
    are we
    just appealing
    to some unknown sensibility
    with considerable rattle?

    oh
    but how we can love
    the music!

    have
    we become
    like everyone else,
    insane and then bent
    on instant rebirth
    and
    instantaneous gratification?

    and
    when we
    can't achieve it,
do we then become a bit
    emotionally crazed
    by consuming everything
    of each other
    and
    its afterburn?

    I can
    only hope not.

    and
    hoping not
    at least helps me
in getting some much needed drive
to go on farther and farther
    until infinity duplicates itself
    with us caught somewhere
    in the middle.
