  • After Christmas dinner Mom and Dad were finishing dishes, as Grandma and grandpa read and Jack played video games with the cousins.

Jess was lying under the Christmas tree, where she’d been most of the day, staring into its luminescent branches picking out her favorite ornaments.
Jess’ cat, Maggie, walked up butting her head on Jess’ face. Happy for the company Jess reached out to greet her with some rubs on the head.

“12 soon, are you excited?” Grandma inquired.

Jess ignored the question, wondering instead if she would still fit under the tree next year. Just then her parents lay down next to her ready for a long winters nap under the tree.
