  • I watched my grandchild being born. It was worse than giving birth myself, but less painful.
    There was a bath, and an uncomplaining woman, and my son in attendance... I thought how I had shouted "it fucking HURTS!" when it was my turn. When he was born.
    She just said "ow" and then there was a splash, and then there was something like a fish in the birthing pool, something like a hooked pike breaking the water, trying to break loose from the spinner.
    Then she was there - suddenly there was another person in the room. She broke out of the water in the midwife's secure grip, held aloft like a prize and then latched to her mother.
    She is my wonder child.
