  • In 2006 I was photographing the widows who are cast aside by their families, and who find refuge in ashrams in Vrindavan; a holy town in India.

And I came across an ashram for elderly sadhus…these are itinerant renunciates, who have left behind all material attachments.

Approaching him, I was puzzled to see he was wearing white earbuds. Really puzzled by that.

Was this renunciate listening to religious mantras on an iPod?

I sat across from him, and in my few words of Hindi, greeted him.

He smiled, reached in the pouch dangling from his neck, and turned on his hearing device.

He was deaf, and wore an antiquated hearing device…with white earbuds.

Did Steve Jobs ever meet him when he traveled to India?

Perhaps this is where Apple's idea of white earbuds came from.

    Perhaps. Just perhaps.
