  • Ok, I admit to being a trekkie.

No, I don't go to conventions,
but I have seen all the movies
    and I love Captain Kirk.
Despite his being a space age
    "mad men" romancer of women.

"To boldly go where no man
    has gone before"
    - who wouldn't love that?

A ship with a crew that is
multi-cultural and each appreciated for their unique
talents - who wouldn't love that?

The story lines are creative and often involve one of my favorite topics - time travel.

But my all time favorite theme
is how Kirk always finds a solution in impossible situations.
Not necessarily without some loss, but he always lands on his feet and comes out on the other side. And having that marvelous bravado that Kirk has,
    that fantastic ego,
is what gives him the will to seek and find that solution and push through despite any naysayers.
    And for that reason ....
Kirk is my all time hero.

    James Tiberius Kirk.

    Stepping out into the abyss
    and not knowing the outcome,
    but believing you will land,
that is faith, going beyond the constraints of our humanness.

I have done it twice in my life
....and I landed on my feet,
    in another place internally.

    But most of the time
    life is mundane.
    Mundane can be good,
    I'm not complaining.
    Mundane is not scary,
    mundane doesn't require big decisions.
People have fought and died so we can have the mundane peace of the day.

    And I remember those times
when I had to boldly go.......
    into an abyss
    and I know.......
    I could do it again,
    - if I had to.

America is a bold new world.
    We are arrogant.
We are willing to boldly go...
    We have a multicultural crew.
    We make mistakes.
    We have loss.
But we look for solutions and
at times we step out into the abyss.
We know we have been given
    a mandate
    - Of freedom
    - Of equality

And despite our humanness, our mistakes, our disagreements in philosophy or politics, - we are one in our mission, we come together in our grief, and move forward in our vision for the future.

    We are the Enterprise,
"boldly going where no man has gone before."

"One nation, under God, indivisible, with freedom and justice for all."

In gratitude to veterans past and present, everywhere,
    .........for boldly going.
Music by Michael Giacchino, Star Trek movie; director: JJ Abrams
