  • adamantine \ad-uh-MAN-teen\, adjective:

    1. Utterly unyielding or firm in attitude or opinion.
    2. Too hard to cut, break, or pierce.
    3. Like a diamond in luster.

Words, like so many aspects of life, are nuanced and layered with slices of meaning. We earthly beings can be adamantine in a stance, an attitude, a decision, a command, an expectation, and yes, an age-old resentment or grudge.

But just as joy and sorrow, life and death, endings and beginnings walk side by side in the same alley, shop, village, town, park, city, home, institution, so dwell the impact and import and power of words.

God help us if our unwillingness to yield causes us to become near brittle in spirit and grow adamantine hearts as defined in numbers 1 and 2. But God bless us if our joy and love of life is palpable and veritably adamantine, "like a diamond in luster."
