  • Reverent and still
    darkened over 200 years
    with scaled patina

Each granite slab measured 5' by 18" square
Stacked three high and extending fifty feet to either side
of an iron gate closed and centered

Hoping over the wall is easier than using the gate
it being rusted and screeching disapprovingly of my use
    but that's what I prefer

The gate opening upon a path
    which passes by gravestones
    pitch to and fro

    some fallen and left
    others set upright and repaired
to where my attention is drawn

The cemetery is a bastion of evil spirits
    especially when the days light
slips into the chill of an October night

    It was late Halloween night
    and from my yard
voices echoed from inside the cemetery

I approached the gate of which I must pass
called by the strange incantations and wicked laughter
as the gate screeches and the moonlight pales
