  • When I asked Russell if he'd like a copy of the photograph emailed to him he nodded and handed me his card. "Justice and Peace Representative" read the job title under his name.
"Great, maybe this picture will make it up on your site. Send me the link" he said and we shook hands.
He walked away and I paused to reread his card. Whenever I stop someone on the street to ask for a portrait my primary focus is getting a good shot before the patience of person wanes and they want to leave. I sensed Russell was in a hurry. He looked and acted like he had somewhere to be.
I emailed the portrait to him the next day and asked what he did as a representative for peace and justice.
"I do the justice, peace, and environmental advocacy/organizing for an order of Catholic sisters, who are primarily in nursing and social services. The Little Sisters of the Assumption have a global/policy/justice vision, but in the midst of enabling personal (and very local change) for people, the structural change piece kinda gets lost. So, they take on a person who works for structural change full-time, and that's me. I am involved in the struggles: for economic justice, for the DREAM Act, for human rights (especially of migrants), against deportations, against fracking, against the Keystone XL Pipeline, against the Indian Point nuclear power plant, and so on."
I'd like to shoot some of that work.
