  • Another poetry challenge - write a poem about your first real kiss. There was room for one more entry before it closed, so I scrawled this one out in a hurry to get it in. In a shocking upset, it won the gold medal for the contest! Not my first kiss, but the first one that led to more than a hangover. This one led to a memorable, though only, date - but, eventually, many, many years later (yesterday), to a gold medal in a poetry contest! Yeah! (Not that I'm competitive or anything!...:-) )

    I was the new kid in the school,
    Each day she passed me in the hall;
    I was enamored by her sweet charms,
    In my mind she was the fairest 0f all!

    I knew that I stood not a chance!
    Word was she dated the football star;
    While I was just a lowly nobody,
    The distance between us was much too far!

    But I couldn't stop myself from dreaming
    Of the day that I could simply say "Hi!";
    To gaze in her eyes, to touch her hair,
    But I was just too hopelessly shy!

    At nights I worked in the restaurant,
    Where I was confident and so much more;
    There, I was a star in my own right,
    With lots of friends, I was self-assured!

    A Christmas party at work was thrown,
    With dancing, drinking and food for us;
    A girl who worked in salad prep
    Brought a friend, and wanted to introduce us...

    She brought me over to their table,
    I nearly fell over when I saw the girl
    I'd been dreaming about, for months at school!
    But now she was here in my own world!

    With me in all my glory there,
    Not shy at all, and feeling blessed!
    I asked her if she wanted to dance?
    She shyly smiled and nodded, "Yes!"

    We hit it off like we were meant
    To be together, despite how far
    Our paths did differ, our worlds' apart,
    She said she'd broken up with the star!

    That night was better than the movies,
    I certainly was thunderstruck!
    I really couldn't quite get over,
    My serendipitous good luck!

    She was staying with her friend that night
    She asked if I could drive her there;
    We left the party before the rest,
    She snuggled up as I touched her hair!

    She looked up at me and smiled so bright,
    My head was swimming in the bliss
    Of a night I'd always remember for
    That moment we began to kiss!

    Her spirit was as vibrant as
    Her lovely face, her full, wet lips;
    I drank her essence fully in,
    As we sat forever, locked in a kiss...

    When finally came the time to leave,
    I asked if I could take her out
    On a date sometime, and she smiled "yes!"
    As if there never was a doubt!

    I didn't drive home, I floated there!
    Yes, I was flying high on cloud nine!
    That, my friends, is my story of
    The first real kiss of hers and mine!
