  • Ever since he got that thing, he spent an hour each morning playing his guitar. Mainly because it was his own, his own time, his own passion. And it relaxed him from his very different doldrum job. It was his daily meditation.

He never thought it would take him on stage but he found pleasure in the music... and the comradery.

It didn't define him but it was a new definition in his life. And he found out he was good at it. And most importantly, it made him happy. And thus, made everyone else around him happier. Just from an hour a day.

Gladwell identifies the "10,000-Hour Rule" in Outliers in which he suggests that the key to achieving success is by practicing for a total of 10,000 hours. At an hour a day, that would be a little over 27 years. That's a lot of years... but than again, I'm not trying to define that success. Success doesn't equate to happiness.

So this is the beginning of my hour a day journey. Without setting rules, I want to keep it simple. I want to reflect upon recent events or find inspiration from past moments through photos and write something. A story... I hope.

And I thought it would be apropos to start it on the first day of this Lenten season. Instead of avoidance, I thought I would devote this season by embarking on a journey and add a new discipline.

I want to write more thoughtfully.
