  • Voyager and I set out in ‘77

The same year George Willig climbed the South Tower,

the guillotine dropped for the last time,

Jimmy Carter warned that oil consumption had to change,

    The neutron bomb was born,

    Stars Wars opened,

    Elvis died,

    Smallpox was eradicated.

She had a date with Jupiter

I just wanted out of school.

    Maybe I saw her

A momentary brightness from my dorm window

Dude, said Umbo, you hear? They launched a probe to Uranus.

    And took another toke.

    It seems we stand

    on a rickety

    duct-taped stool,

    tippy toe,

    stretching for the shelf.

    She’s reached the city limits,

    the solar boundary.

    I’ve passed fifty.

    No pause.

    No backward glance.

    On she sails,

alone, among the stars of our galax-sea.

Next port of call, forty thousand years.
