  • We are all wearing red,

    simmering on a gradient,

    vermillion stove of color

to honor the lunar new year.

    As the lions dance,

their ritual ushers in the new

    and evicts the bad spirits

    from the Chinese garden.

    Firecrackers explode, wind chimes

rattle and we feel in the breeze,

the first day is for the welcoming deities

    of the heavens and earth.

    We pray for luck

We exchange red envelopes for prosperity

    We light candles for longevity

Sweets are eaten to ensure a sweet year.

    Together we ponder the future.

    Earth ox is celebrated,

    a water buffalo birth

    in lotus blossoms,

    Floating lanterns set adrift

    against the open sky.

This place is never twice the same.
