    Families should go together. Are we a family? Are we single. Which box did we check?

    My husband and I go together. Not correct. The federal government doesn't recognize us as a family. We are domestic partners, but it doesn't matter. We've been together for twelve years. It doesn't matter. Married in California since 2008, just before the proposition 8 vote. You are single.

    Normally this issue of marriage versus domestic partners doesn't feel like it directly affects me, except for the occasional box marked single or married in various federal forms. But we are not all equal. There is no separation of church and government and we wait in separate lines until the greater public decides what to do with us.
