  • It was the summer of 2012 and eight companions and I had just set up camp on the summit of a mountain nestled in upstate New York. The sun had begun to dip into a crimson washed sky stenciled with the silhouettes of neighboring peaks. We found a rocky ledge to let our feet dangle over as we watched the panoramic views open around us. For the first fifteen minutes or so, the snaps of pictures being taken and folky songs were all to be heard, but as the sunset's waves of color intensified, a peaceful silence rose. I could more clearly taste the pure alpine air and feel the mighty, mountain winds encircling us. Gazing below, my eyes traced over the silver fingers of lakes spread out between sloping emerald hills. In this silence, I found a beautiful power. A power that unlocked a clarity about everything that surrounded me. After the sun had disappeared and night's silent hand began to creep up from the corners of the sky, small conversations started to sprout up among us. Turning back towards our tents, my companions and I laughed and sang out into the wide open world, with the power of silence still lingering in the air.
