  • There wasn't much alive in the gardens on the last day of the year. The rose bushes were all thorns. The trees were bare. But then there were these three teenagers. One of the girls was wearing a tail – a raccoon tail – tucked into the back of her shorts.

I watched them for a minute, thinking of my best friends in high school. We were a lot like these three. Walking on the foggy beach in our thrift store clothes, sneaking through the brambles to get onto the trestle, tearing around in The Nude.

My best friend's car was called The Nude so we could say, "We drove to the city in The Nude." "We nearly got in a wreck in The Nude." "We spent all day listening to the Ramones in The Nude."
