  • It was New Year's Eve and I had not been invited to a party yet. Depressed I ate a whole box of chocolates on the long journey home in the London Underground.

    When I got home there was a message waiting for me. It was a party invitation from one of the girls from my youth club.

    I took half an hour perfecting my appearance. I had recently finished a fashion modelling course and knew how to apply makeup for photo shoots and dress for the cat walk.

    During the party I left the room for a few minutes to go to the bathroom; just as I was approaching the room again I heard a girl bitching about me to all my friends.

    "She's got a false hair piece, false eyelashes.....what else is false about her?" she said,followed by brittle laughter.

    What a shock! I do not take things lightly. I managed to walk back into the room and stay for an hour longer;

    I brooded on this revelation all week and I realized that I had been hiding behind a facade and painted false version of myself. A persona that my mother had encouraged.

    It took me a long time to be confident without makeup, and even longer to behave naturally; but it was worth the effortl
