  • First of all, I’ll admit that this feels like a brag. It may be, but it meant enough to me that I think I want it recorded somewhere.

    For several years I have selfishly enjoyed traveling the state and taking pictures that support the state science curriculum for 5th grade. Putting together a geology presentation was equally satisfying. Why not show students examples of the geological processes that have shaped the landscape of our state - things they can see in their own neighborhoods or within a few hours drive? It is all right here underfoot.

    Since retiring I have been able to visit several schools with the presentation. The really lovely art work and the delightful comments on thank you notes told me the kids enjoyed our time together and they actually learned something. One in particular stood out:

    “Now when I travel in the car, I’m going to look out the window instead of play video games.”

    Yep. That’s it.
