  • Before my great grandkids arrival, I had been busy buying play materials, like art journals, brushes, watercolor pencils and a few other basics for them so that they could start their own art journals. As part of our journeying/journaling, we made a day trip to the Nature Center at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) in Kentucky, enjoying the outdoors, and the red wolves, owls, hummingbirds and buffalo. We also picked up maps and little brochures so we would have some great collage material for our journals.

We began by covering our journal pages with gesso using a silicone paint shaper, so that the paper would be more receptive for art materials, and the shaper is easier to wash than a brush. While the gesso was drying, we learned how to make our own stamps by heating a foam block with a heat gun, and then pressing our tennis shoe into the block and getting an impression of the tread from our shoes. You can see my shoe prints in the orange and green shapes in the first photo, on the right hand page.

  • We added collage material and played with paint and learned how to roll out the paint on a tray with a brayer, roll the paint on our stamps and print with it in our journals. Then we learned how to use stencils to make a clear image on our pages, and how to use the watercolor pencils to make nice washes and details.

  • The first journal page photo is of the 2 pages that I used to demonstrate using stamps and stencils, applying matt medium to glue down collage pieces, and using the water color pencils dry and with water for different effects. The next four photos are their playing on the journal pages using those techniques. They really enjoyed the journaling and LBL, and will have some wonderful memories of their journey. I think they did a great job journaling and we even did some meditation.

There's more to come on journaling……
