  • On Sunday morning I ran a 10 mile race alongside 30 of my students. It was a beautiful day to run 10 miles down Broad Street in Philadelphia. It was also my birthday.

Being a math and science teacher I often think in a very concrete way. In that mind set, I realized that I would begin this race as a 27 year old but finish it as a 28 year old. How, you might ask, could this be possible? Well, on May 6, 1984 I was born, around 10:34 am. We started running the race at 9:01 and at 10:37 I finished. Technically, I began the race as a 27 year old and finished as a 28 year old, just 2 minutes after my actual time of birth.

It just so happens that on this very extraordinary day I also achieved my best time yet. I crossed the finish line hand in hand with one of my students at one hour, 36 minutes. This was one of the best birthdays yet!
