  • Onto the rock with fresh bootheels,

Step by step making way through

Wildlands where man is still a curiosity.

Up. Over the next ridge and up,

    past slumber-crumbling giants of rock.

Up, beyond the twist-tangles of sage Juniper.

Step by step through the Wildlands.

    Cross the shatter-fractured slickstone,

to gaze into oasis overflows with clear, silent pools

and whispering trickles of stream for serpents thirst.

Over the next ridge and up.

Past the blackened trunks – lightening touched and lifeless.

    Onto the rock, into puddles of sand;

wind rippled round, erasing, slowly, the curious print

of man in the wilderness. Step by step,

up to the next ridge and stare into empty space.

    World stretched horizon,

texture red landscape and wind wild touched soil.

Awed observation in grand scale of Creation’s careful skill.

Pause, Turn. Return to the rock with Wiser bootheels.

Step by step. Making way through Wildlands where man is still a curiosity.

Down. Over the next ridge and down.

    To fleeting familiarity and beyond—

    A new destination described

    As somewhere unseen to find.
