  • I usually do my grocery shopping early on Saturday morning. I like it then, because the store's quiet, and the checkouts aren't busy.

Except for sometimes they don't have many cashiers working, so then I have to wait anyhow.

Yesterday the lottery cashier called me over and offered to run me through her cash, which is normally a third express lane. So I pushed my cart over to her, glad to get done and get out of the store quickly.

As she was scanning my things, she commented that I only had fruits and vegetables - no extras like toilet paper or paper towels.

I said something about not needing anything this week, but was secretly kind of shocked that she'd noticed, although of course she sees me go through the checkout every Saturday morning, and she knows what I buy.

I guess that because I generally assume no-one is noticing the passage of my life, I was surprised to find out that someone's noticing, after all.
