  • " Yellow bird, up high in banana tree" My Grandfather always sang that song whenever he saw a yellow bird. Every time I see a yellow bird, I hear him singing that song. He always comes to me along with the yellow birds. He never did get back to his native homeland of Barbados. Grandpa George migrated to Cape Breton to work in the steel plant as a young man with many other Bajan immigrants. He always wore two flannel shirts and a salt n pepper cap even in the summer. I remember asking him why he had no hair and had no teeth. He laughed and told me that it was because he was going back to the place he was before he was born. I had to think deeply about that then and I still do today, picturing his smiling face. Yellow bird, up high in banana tree......
