My name is John Wendle.

I am a cyclist, freelancer, on, photojournalist, reader, reporter, and videographer. I was born on 18 February, 1980 in Youngstown, Ohio, USA. I live in Kabul, Kābol, Afghanistan. You can also find me here. I’ve told 1 story. I joined Cowbird on July 7, 2011.

About Razistan: Razistan – or Land of Secrets – is a collective of foreign and local independent photojournalists based in Afghanistan who are seeking to tell the untold stories of the war and give the conflict the attention it demands.

To see more of our photos – recording both daily life and the war – and to learn about the photojournalists, visit our page at To learn more about Razistan, watch the video at and help support us through our Kickstarter campaign.

About me: I am a freelance reporter, photographer and videographer. I have lived in Afghanistan for two years. I worked in Helmand and Kandahar for a year and a half as a photographer for an NGO. I began freelancing again in February. I write mostly for TIME and shoot for Polaris Images. I have also done video for CNN and Channel 4. Previously I lived in Moscow where I freelanced for TIME and worked for The Moscow Times. I covered the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia. Before Moscow, I studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where I focused on photography and conflict and business reporting. From 2005-2006 I worked at The Caspian Business News in Baku, Azerbaijan where I was the deputy editor. I became interested in the Caspian region after living in Aktau, Kazakhstan where I served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer. Much before all of this I went to a Montessori School for 12 years and also studied French, later on.
