  • Produced for WCAI's Sonic IDs
(Part of a collaboration between Transom and Cowbird)

    Notes from Jay Allison

Usually our Sonic IDs are about the place we live, within the listening area of WCAI. But we have a lot of Cape Verdeans here and this Sonic was like a gift, brought back. Jenny Gustafsson was a student at the Transom Story Workshop when she recorded it. Her arrangement of the sound is like a story emerging from a cracked egg.

She says, "The man singing in the sonic is called Jose, and he lives on one of the islands of Cape Verde. It was first played for me on another cape – Cape Cod, in northern Massachusetts – by a man called Vasco Pires. I had met him to talk about his Cape Verdean heritage, and we soon sat looking at photos and films from his trips to the islands. When he played Jose's singing, we both just smiled."
